L.M. Montgomery kept detailed personal journals throughout her life, and they have been published in multiple editions. The Complete Journals series, edited by Mary Henley Rubio and Elizabeth Hillman Waterston, presents an unabridged scholarly edition of her diaries. The volumes cover her Prince Edward Island years (1889-1911) and her Ontario years (1911-1933).
The journals reveal a much more complex person than the cheerful public image suggested by her novels. Montgomery wrote frankly about her depression, her difficult marriage, legal battles with her publisher, and the gap between her popular success and her private unhappiness. The journals are required reading for anyone interested in Montgomery beyond the Anne books.
