The Little Brother series began in 2008 with the novel that shares its name. Cory Doctorow wrote the original book as a young adult story about Marcus Yallow, a San Francisco teenager who fights back against the Department of Homeland Security after a terrorist attack leads to mass surveillance. Homeland (2013) continued Marcus’s story as he deals with leaked government documents.
Attack Surface (2020) shifted the perspective to Masha Maximow, a character who had been working on the surveillance side. The series also includes shorter works like Lawful Interception and the 2024 additions Spill and Vigilant. Throughout, Doctorow uses fiction to explore real questions about encryption, privacy, and the balance between security and freedom.
