Lily Harper’s story begins with her death – or something very close to it. Better Off Dead, published in 2013, drops Lily into a supernatural situation that sends her into the underworld, and the series follows her across thirteen books as she fights her way through demons, lords of illusion, and the final battle that closes out her arc in 2023. It is a darker series than some of Mallory’s other work, with titles like To Hell and Back, Devil in Disguise, and Mark of the Beast reflecting the tone.
The series ran in fits and starts across a decade. The first three books came out in 2013 and 2014, followed by Persephone in 2015 and The Bladesmith in 2016, before a gap that ended with Rebirth in 2019. From there, Mallory kept the series moving through 2020 and 2021, finally closing the story with The Final Battle in 2023. The gaps between some installments are long, so readers picking up the series now have the advantage of being able to read straight through.
The Lily Harper series will appeal to readers who like their paranormal romance on the darker, more action-driven side. Lily grows considerably as a character across thirteen books, and the supernatural world she inhabits is built out in detail across the full series arc.
