The Lightbringer series is an epic fantasy set in a world where magic is based on light. Drafters, those with magical ability, can split light into its component colors and transform it into a physical substance called luxin. Each color has different properties and uses, from the solid strength of blue luxin to the explosive nature of red.
The series follows multiple characters across a world that has been shaped by chromaturgy (light magic) for centuries. The Chromeria, a religious and political institution, trains and controls drafters while maintaining order through the Prism, a single individual who can draft all colors. When the series begins, Gavin Guile has been Prism for sixteen years and holds more secrets than anyone knows.
Brent Weeks builds a complex magic system with clearly defined rules and costs. Drafting shortens a drafter’s life, and using too much luxin eventually drives drafters mad. The series combines intricate magical battles, political intrigue, and character development across five books.
