Lifting the Veil is a four-book series that moves away from the purely post-apocalyptic settings of O’Brien’s earlier work and into supernatural territory. Fallen (2018) introduces the premise, and the story continues through Winter, Emergence, and Risen across 2018 and 2019. The series is built around the idea of a boundary between the natural and supernatural worlds growing thin.
O’Brien brings the same tactical, action-oriented writing style from his military fiction to a story about forces that can’t be fought with conventional weapons. The four-book length gives the series room to build its mythology without overstaying its welcome.
