The Liberty Chapman series picks up where the Lilly Valentine books left off in terms of Helen Black’s interest in crime and social class. Liberty Chapman is a solicitor who grew up on a rough Yorkshire estate and now works in criminal law. Her background gives her an edge in understanding the communities her cases come from, but it also pulls her back into the world she tried to leave behind.
Taking Liberties (2017) introduced the character, followed by Bang to Rights and Playing Dirty in 2019, and Hard as Nails in 2021. The series combines legal procedure with street-level crime fiction.
