Carroll’s standalone works show the range of his writing beyond the Alice and Sylvie and Bruno series. The Hunting of the Snark (1876) is an extended nonsense poem about a bizarre crew searching for a creature called the Snark, with the warning that some Snarks are actually Boojums.
A Tangled Tale presents mathematical puzzles wrapped in story form. Carroll originally published these as a serial in a magazine, challenging readers to solve the problems embedded in each tale. Bruno’s Revenge is an early short story that later grew into the Sylvie and Bruno novels.
