The Lew Fonesca series by Stuart M. Kaminsky follows a former Chicago man who relocated to Sarasota, Florida, after his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Fonesca works as a process server, a job that keeps putting him in contact with people who have problems. Despite his clinical depression and desire to be left alone, he keeps getting pulled into cases that demand his attention.
The series ran for six novels between 1999 and 2009. Fonesca is a quieter, more introspective protagonist than Kaminsky’s other detectives, and the Sarasota setting gives the books a different feel from the Hollywood glamour of Toby Peters or the cold-weather grit of Porfiry Rostnikov. The supporting cast includes a therapist, a local fixer, and various clients whose legal troubles escalate into dangerous territory.
