Selena “Lena” Dane left the Chicago Police Department under difficult circumstances and now runs a small private investigation agency, going through the motions until a case forces her back to full attention. The first novel, The Big Keep, opens with Lena taking on a teenage client searching for his biological father while simultaneously learning she is unexpectedly pregnant. The case pulls her halfway across the country and puts her in the path of someone willing to kill to keep certain information buried.
The Lena Dane books represent a deliberate departure from Melissa F. Olson’s better-known paranormal work. There is no Old World here, no magic, no creatures of the night. What the series shares with her other fiction is an interest in flawed, competent female protagonists working through situations where the personal and professional are impossible to separate. Lena is smart and capable, but also carrying real damage from her past on the force.
