Lemony Snicket’s picture books bring his distinctive voice to the youngest readers. The Dark (2013), illustrated by Jon Klassen, won a Caldecott Honor and tells the story of a boy afraid of the dark — which turns out to have something to show him. The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming (2007) is a Hanukkah story about a screaming potato pancake, and The Lump of Coal (2008) follows a piece of coal who wants to be something more.
Other titles include 13 Words (2010), a story built around thirteen carefully chosen words; 29 Myths on the Swinster Pharmacy (2014); Baby in the Manger (2007); Goldfish Ghost (2017); and The Bad Mood and the Stick (2017). Each picture book carries Snicket’s deadpan sensibility into territory suitable for read-aloud sessions.
