Legends of Dune is a prequel series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, set thousands of years before Frank Herbert’s original novel. The series covers the Butlerian Jihad, the war between humanity and the thinking machines that established the most fundamental rule of the Dune universe: “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.” The core trilogy consists of The Butlerian Jihad (2002), The Machine Crusade (2002), and The Battle of Corrin (2004).
The series also includes related short fiction and overlapping titles with the Great Schools of Dune series. By going back to the earliest major events in Dune’s history, Herbert and Anderson filled in the backstory that Frank Herbert had only hinted at, showing readers how the universe they knew came to be.
