Lee Jackson’s two standalone novels sit alongside his mystery series as further explorations of Victorian London. London Dust was his first published novel in 2003 and introduced readers to his detailed, research-heavy approach to historical fiction. Set in the streets and back alleys of 19th-century London, it laid the groundwork for everything Jackson would write afterward.
The Diary of a Murder followed in 2011, after Jackson had completed both the Decimus Webb and Sarah Tanner series. Like all of his fiction, it draws on his encyclopedic knowledge of the Victorian city. Both novels are set firmly in the same world as his series work, making them good companions for readers who have finished the Webb and Tanner books and want more of Jackson’s atmospheric period writing.
