Laurence Leamer is best known for his nonfiction, but he has published two novels over the course of his career. Assignment (1981) came early, during a period when Leamer was still establishing himself as a journalist and author. It draws on his interest in international reporting and political intrigue.
The President’s Butler (2016) arrived more than three decades later, after Leamer had published numerous bestselling nonfiction titles. The novel takes a satirical look at American political life through the eyes of a White House butler. Given Leamer’s deep knowledge of Palm Beach high society and Washington politics (subjects he covered in Mar-A-Lago and his Kennedy books), the fictional setting gave him a chance to have some fun with material he knew well from the nonfiction side.
