Michelle Spring’s Laura Principal series follows a Cambridge-based private investigator. Every Breath You Take (1994) introduces Laura, and the series runs through In the Midnight Hour (2009) with five novels total.
The Cambridge setting gives the series a distinctive feel compared to most PI fiction. Laura’s cases often connect to the university world and the tensions between town and gown. Running for Shelter (1995) and Standing in the Shadows (1998) build on the character’s personal life alongside her investigations. Nights in White Satin (1999) deals with darker subject matter and is considered one of the strongest entries.
In the Midnight Hour arrived in 2009, a full decade after the previous book. The gap between entries did not diminish interest among fans of the series. Spring, a Canadian-born author based in the UK, brought an outsider’s perspective to the English settings that kept the stories fresh across the fifteen-year run.
