Laura Caldwell’s non-fiction includes Long Way Home (2010), an account of her work advocating for the wrongly convicted.
Long Way Home tells the true story of a man who spent over a decade in prison for a crime he did not commit. Caldwell, a former lawyer and law professor, became involved in the case through her innocence project at Loyola University Chicago. The book follows the legal process from investigation through exoneration.
Caldwell was also a novelist, but Long Way Home shows a different side of her writing. The book reads as part legal narrative, part personal account of what it means to fight for someone’s freedom within a system that has already failed them. It remains her only solo non-fiction title.
