The Lane Winslow series by Iona Whishaw follows a young Englishwoman who relocates to the small, rural community of King’s Cove in British Columbia after serving in British intelligence during World War II. Lane hopes for a quiet life in the Kootenay mountains, but the village and surrounding area keep producing murders, thefts, and other crimes that draw her in. She works alongside Inspector Darling of the Nelson Police, and their professional relationship develops into a personal one as the series progresses.
Set in the late 1940s, the books capture a period when Canada was adjusting to peacetime life. Returning soldiers, Cold War tensions, and lingering wartime secrets all appear across the series. Whishaw grew up in the Kootenay region herself, and her descriptions of the landscape, the weather, and small-town life give the books a grounded, lived-in quality. The series has been adapted into a CBC television show, bringing King’s Cove and its residents to a wider audience.
