The Lancashire Girls series is a set of historical sagas by Libby Ashworth, set in the industrial north of England during the 1800s. Ashworth was born and raised in Lancashire and is passionate about the region’s history. She also writes under the name Elizabeth Ashworth.
The first book, The Convict’s Wife, is based on real people. It tells the story of Molly Holden, whose husband Thomas is convicted in 1812 of being a Luddite on the word of a secret informer and sentenced to transportation to Australia. Ashworth recreated their story from surviving letters. Left alone with a baby, Molly has to find a way to support herself in a harsh industrial landscape. A Mother’s Fight and The Runaway Daughter continue the saga with stories of other women facing similar struggles in Lancashire during this period.
