Laila Ibrahim’s standalone novels expand her range beyond the Freedman/Johnson series. Living Right (2016) examines tensions between religious community and individual choice. Paper Wife (2018) tells the story of a Chinese woman who immigrates to San Francisco as a “paper wife” in the early twentieth century, navigating a marriage to a man she barely knows in a country that does not want her.
After the Rain (2024) is her most recent standalone, continuing her interest in family dynamics and cross-cultural relationships. These books share thematic DNA with the Freedman/Johnson series in their focus on women’s resilience and the complications of identity, but each explores a different community and historical moment.
