Outside the Land of Oz, L. Frank Baum wrote a wide range of standalone novels that show his interests in fairy tales, adventure, and even political fiction. Some of these books, like The Enchanted Island of Yew (1903) and Queen Zixi of Ix (1905), are pure fantasy in the mold of his Oz stories. Others, like The Fate of a Crown (1905) and Daughters of Destiny (1906), are adventure novels set in real-world locations that Baum published under the pen name Schuyler Staunton.
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (1902) is one of Baum’s most unusual and enduring works, telling the origin story of Santa Claus as a fairy tale. The Master Key (1902) is an early science fiction novel about a boy who accidentally contacts an electrical being. Other notable titles include John Dough and the Cherub (1906), a fantasy about a gingerbread man who comes to life, and Policeman Bluejay (1907), a talking-animal story. Several of these novels have been rediscovered and republished, with some reaching new audiences through posthumous editions that appeared as late as 1968.
