The Five Wounds (2021) starts with a man named Amadeo Padilla preparing to be nailed to a cross in his New Mexico town’s Holy Week reenactment. He takes the role seriously, maybe the first thing he has taken seriously in years. On the same day, his fifteen-year-old daughter Angel arrives pregnant and needing a place to stay. Kirstin Valdez Quade builds a novel around this family’s attempt to hold itself together.
The book was a finalist for the National Book Award. Quade writes about poverty, addiction, and Catholicism in northern New Mexico without condescension or sentimentality. Her characters make bad decisions and live with the consequences, and the novel earns its emotional moments by refusing to simplify anyone.
