Keziah Frost’s two novels are companion stories set in the same small town. The Reluctant Fortune-Teller (2018) introduces Norbert Zelenka, a 73-year-old man who is broke, lonely, and persuaded by the local busybody Carlotta Moon into setting up shop as a fortune-teller. Despite having no psychic abilities whatsoever, Norbert discovers that listening to people and offering thoughtful advice is its own kind of gift.
Getting Rid of Mabel (2019) shifts the spotlight to Carlotta, who has her own problems to deal with when an unwanted houseguest disrupts her carefully managed life. Both books have a warmth and humor that come from their focus on characters who are past retirement age but still growing and changing.
