Summers began his publishing career through short fiction, entering the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds contest and winning Third Prize with “Isolation Ward 4” in 2001. That story’s appearance on the Nebula Awards preliminary ballot helped establish him as a short fiction writer worth watching.
His independently published shorts include The Paladin and A Heart Is Judged from 2011, No. 38 from 2014, and Precious In Thy Sight from 2017. These cover a range of genres and tones, from science fiction to more faith-inflected speculative work, reflecting the breadth of his interests as a writer.
Short fiction has remained a consistent part of Summers’ output alongside his novels and non-fiction. His ongoing contributions to Tales from the Canyons of the Damned show that he still works regularly at the shorter form.
