Kevin Crossley-Holland’s standalone novels reflect the same interests that drive his entire body of work: medieval history, northern European legend, and the landscapes of Britain. His retelling of Beowulf, first published in 1982, is widely regarded as one of the finest modern translations of the Old English poem.
Other standalones draw on Welsh mythology (The Tale of Taliesin, The Quest for Olwen) and medieval English settings (Crossing to Paradise, Waterslain Angels). His 2021 novel Arthur: The Always King returned to Arthurian territory, retelling the full legend for a new generation.
