Kelly Braffet’s standalone novels explore dark territory. Josie and Jack (2005) is about a brother and sister whose isolated upbringing has left them dangerously dependent on each other. Last Seen Leaving (2006) follows the aftermath of a woman’s disappearance through the people who knew her. Save Yourself (2013) weaves together the stories of several characters in a small Pennsylvania town, each struggling with guilt and inertia.
All three books share Braffet’s talent for writing people who are stuck, either literally or emotionally, and the slow process of figuring out whether escape is possible. Readers who enjoy character-driven literary fiction with a darker edge will find these novels worth seeking out.
