The K’Barthan series is M.T. McGuire’s main work, a comic science fiction and fantasy saga set in a parallel world called K’Barth. The series follows The Pan, a reluctant hero who starts out as a small-time getaway driver and ends up at the center of a struggle against K’Barth’s oppressive ruler. The tone mixes slapstick humor with real peril, and the world-building has the kind of absurd internal logic that fans of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams will recognize.
The six books include both full-length novels and shorter entries that fill in gaps in the story. Few Are Chosen kicks things off, and the series builds through The Wrong Stuff, One Man: No Plan, and Looking for Trouble. Night Swimming and Unlucky Dip add context to events before and during the main storyline. Readers should start with Few Are Chosen to get the full experience.
