Katherena Vermette’s standalone novels are literary fiction rooted in Indigenous experiences in Winnipeg. The Break (2016) was her first novel, following multiple women connected to a violent crime in the city’s North End neighbourhood. It became a national bestseller in Canada and was adapted for television by the CBC.
The Strangers (2021) continues to explore similar territory, examining family and community in Winnipeg through interconnected perspectives. Real Ones (2024) is her most recent novel. All three books share Vermette’s interest in how violence, displacement, and resilience shape the lives of Indigenous women and their communities.
