Kate Manning has published three standalone novels over a twenty-year span, each one rooted in a different period of American history. While the books are not connected by plot or characters, they share Manning’s interest in women who challenge the social rules of their time.
Whitegirl (2002) was her debut, a novel about race and relationships in modern America. My Notorious Life (2013) shifted to the 1800s, drawing on the true story of a midwife whose work made her both famous and reviled in Victorian New York. Gilded Mountain (2022) moved further west and further back, telling the story of a young woman caught between the wealthy elite and the immigrant laborers in a Colorado mining town at the turn of the twentieth century. Since these are standalone novels, they can be read in any order.
