Rick Murcer’s Between Skies follows Kate Bennett, whose life falls apart when her forty-one-year-old husband Pete, a pastor in Orlando, dies of a sudden heart attack. Left with two teenage children and her grandmother and forced to vacate the church parsonage, Kate has no home and no income.
Her former boss, Caleb Moore, offers a lifeline: return to work as an investigator in his bail bonds firm and take on a thirty-five-year-old cold case. Three teenagers were murdered in Cedarview, Michigan, and the person who hired Moore is willing to pay a million dollars to finally get answers. Kate relocates her family to Cedarview, but quickly discovers that people in town do not want the case reopened.
The book is a departure from Murcer’s typical serial killer thrillers. It has a slower pace and incorporates faith-based themes alongside the mystery plot, reflecting Kate’s background as a pastor’s wife navigating grief while rebuilding her career.
