Frannie and Tru (2016) is the stronger and better-known of Hattrup’s two novels. Its premise — a teenage girl’s summer with the glamorous cousin she has built up in her imagination — gives it a clear structural engine, and the novel uses that premise to examine class, race, and sexuality without making any of those subjects feel like issues in place of characters.
Our Year in Love and Parties (2019) is lighter in tone, following a group of teenagers across a year of milestones. Both books are short, fast-reading contemporary YA with enough emotional honesty to stick after the last page.
