Karen Ann Hopkins’s two standalone novels show her range as a writer. Willow Creek, also published under the title One Kiss Is All It Takes, is an Amish romance. It follows Katie Colter, whose life was saved during a storm by Rowan Coblentz, an Amish boy from a neighboring settlement. A kiss sparked a forbidden connection, but Katie’s father found them together and banished Rowan. Six years later, with her father dead and the family farm in trouble, Katie turns to Rowan for help, and the shy boy she once knew has become a very different man.
The Fortuna Coin goes in a completely different direction. It is a psychological thriller with paranormal and time-travel elements. Wendy Catalano, a remarried mother of four, becomes a murder victim along with her family at the hands of her ex-husband. A family heirloom sends her back in time to the start of her relationship with her future killer, giving her the chance to change the outcome. The book deals with domestic abuse and the weight of personal choices, mixing suspense with a speculative premise that sets it apart from Hopkins’s other work.
