Carl Hiaasen’s young adult novels bring his environmental passion and Florida setting to younger readers. Hoot (2002), which received a Newbery Honor, follows middle schoolers trying to protect a colony of burrowing owls from a construction project. Flush (2005), Scat (2009), Chomp (2012), Squirm (2018), and Wrecker (2023) continue in the same vein.
Each book features young protagonists who take on environmental villains, from polluters to poachers. The books are lighter in tone than Hiaasen’s adult novels but carry the same core message about the importance of protecting Florida’s wildlife and wild places.
