The Justice Flanagan series is set in New York City during its roughest years, before modern policing, sanitation, or financial regulation existed. The Devil’s Half Mile (2018) takes place in 1799: young lawyer Justy Flanagan returns from Ireland to investigate his father’s suspicious death and uncovers fraud at the heart of the city’s new stock exchange. The novel’s title refers to the stretch of lower Manhattan where speculators and con men gathered.
Hudson’s Kill (2019) jumps forward to 1803. Flanagan, now a City Marshal, investigates the murder of a young girl in one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods. The book maps the racial and economic fault lines of early New York, from the wealthy trading houses to the squalid tenements of the Five Points.
