The Juniper Song series began with Follow Her Home in 2013 and follows Song, a twenty-something Korean American woman in L.A. who stumbles into detective work. The first book sees her investigating a friend’s suspicions about his girlfriend, and things get much darker from there. Cha writes in a style that nods to classic L.A. noir while grounding the story in a contemporary, multicultural city.
Beware Beware (2014) and Dead Soon Enough (2015) continue Song’s story, with each book bringing new cases and more personal stakes. The trilogy works as a coming-of-age arc wrapped in a mystery series, as Song grows from a reluctant amateur into someone who understands the cost of seeking the truth. Fans of modern noir and culturally specific crime fiction will find a lot to appreciate in these books.
