The original Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park follows the adventures of a loud, funny, and sometimes difficult kindergartner named Junie B. Jones. Starting with Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus in 1992, the books cover Junie B.’s entire kindergarten year as she deals with school buses, class pets, birthday parties, and all the other dramas of being five years old.
Each book is written in Junie B.’s own voice, with her creative approach to grammar and her tendency to say exactly what she thinks. Park based the character partly on her own sons’ early school experiences, and the result is a voice that feels honest in a way that kids recognize. The series ran for nearly a decade before Junie B. finally graduated to first grade in the spin-off series, Junie B., First Grader. With illustrations by Denise Brunkus throughout, these books have become a go-to choice for children who are ready to move beyond picture books.
