Jumanji, published in 1981, tells the story of two children who discover a board game in the park. When they start playing, the game comes to life, bringing lions, monkeys, monsoons, and a volcanic eruption into their home. The only way to end the chaos is to finish the game. The book won the Caldecott Medal in 1982 and was adapted into a 1995 film starring Robin Williams.
Zathura, published in 2002, picks up where Jumanji left off. Two brothers find another game inside the Jumanji box, but this one has a space theme that launches them on an interstellar adventure. Zathura was adapted into a 2005 film directed by Jon Favreau. Both books show Van Allsburg’s trademark combination of detailed illustration and stories where ordinary life gets disrupted by something fantastical.
