Julie Cantrell’s two standalone novels both take place in the Deep South and deal with families under pressure. The Feathered Bone (2016) is set in Louisiana, where a mother’s worst fear comes true when a child disappears during a school trip to New Orleans. The novel explores sex trafficking through the lens of one devastated community. It won the Carol Award for Contemporary Novel of the Year.
Perennials (2017) is set in Oxford, Mississippi. Eva “Lovey” Sutherland returns home for her parents’ fiftieth anniversary after years of estrangement from her sister Bitsy, who has blamed her for a childhood fire. The novel digs into family secrets and second chances, with a landscaper from Lovey’s past complicating the visit.
