The Judge Dee series has roots going back to 1949 with Robert van Gulik’s classic detective novels based on a historical Chinese magistrate. Van Gulik wrote prolifically about Judge Dee from the 1950s through the late 1960s, producing novels like The Chinese Maze Murders, The Red Pavilion, and Murder in Canton that became beloved mysteries worldwide.
Lavie Tidhar has added to the Judge Dee canon with a series of modern novellas that place the detective in unexpected settings beyond Tang Dynasty China. Judge Dee and the Limits of the Law (2020), Judge Dee and the Three Deaths of Count Werdenfels (2021), and several other novellas reimagine the character for contemporary readers while preserving the puzzle-solving spirit of the originals.
