Joshua Ferris’s four novels share a taste for unusual premises and dark humor but are otherwise very different books. Then We Came to the End (2007) is a workplace comedy narrated by a group of advertising employees facing layoffs. The Unnamed (2010) follows a successful lawyer whose body forces him to walk endlessly, no matter where or when. To Rise Again at a Decent Hour (2014) puts a technophobic dentist at the center of an online identity theft with philosophical dimensions.
A Calling for Charlie Barnes (2021) is the most personal-feeling of his novels, narrated by a son trying to write the story of his father, a man of many failed ventures and complicated relationships. Each novel stands on its own with a different cast and setting.
