Josh Weil’s debut, The New Valley, was published in 2009 and collects three novellas set in the mountains of Virginia. Each story focuses on a different man dealing with grief, loneliness, or the threat of losing the land that defines his life. The book won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award and was named a best book of the year by several publications.
The novellas are linked by setting and mood rather than by plot or shared characters. Weil’s writing in this collection is close to the ground, paying careful attention to the physical details of farm work, weather, and the Appalachian landscape. It remains one of the strongest debuts in recent American literary fiction.
