Jonathan Coe has published two standalone short works outside his novels and collections. Both appeared in 2012 and reflect different sides of his writing.
The Broken Mirror is a children’s fable, a departure from Coe’s usual adult fiction. Pentatonic is a story written specifically to be performed with live musical accompaniment, drawing on Coe’s deep interest in music. He has been a musician throughout his life, and the connection between music and storytelling surfaces in much of his longer fiction as well.
