Jon Fosse’s standalone novels include Melancholy I-II (2023) and Morning & Evening (2024). Melancholy is based on the life of Lars Hertervig, a 19th-century Norwegian painter who suffered from mental illness. The two parts trace his decline and his attempts to hold onto his vision of the world.
