Jon Fosse’s shorter fiction spans nearly three decades, from Nightsongs (1997) to Vaim (2025). These novellas and short works show Fosse working at a smaller scale than his novels, but with the same intensity of focus and spare language.
Aliss at the Fire (2004) is perhaps the best known of these, a meditative work about a woman by a fire on a Norwegian fjord. A Shining (2023) and Vaim (2025) represent his more recent shorter work, published after his Nobel Prize brought wider international attention to his catalog.
