The Johnson and Wilde Mysteries take readers along the canals and rivers of England, with each book set in a different waterway location. Canal Pushers, the first entry, establishes the setup: a man living on a narrowboat who gets drawn into a murder investigation on the canals. Subsequent books including River Rats, Oxford Blues, Devil’s Den, and Tulip Murders continue the pattern, sending the main characters to new stretches of water and new troubles.
Andy Griffee uses the canal setting to create a world with its own rules and rhythms. The boating community is close-knit but transient, and the waterways pass through both idyllic countryside and rough urban stretches. Each book delivers a solid whodunit while building on the relationship between the two main characters and their slowly evolving life on the water.
