John W. Campbell’s standalone works include some of the most memorable science fiction of the early 20th century. Who Goes There? (1938) is his most famous single work, a tense novella about scientists at an Antarctic station who discover a frozen alien that can imitate any living thing. It has been adapted for film multiple times, most notably by John Carpenter in 1982.
His other standalones include The Ultimate Weapon (1936), The Moon is Hell! (1950), about astronauts stranded on the lunar surface, and Cloak of Aesir (1952). These works show Campbell’s range from action-driven space fiction to more psychological and survival-oriented stories.
