The John Sutter series consists of two novels separated by nearly two decades. The Gold Coast, published in 1990, introduces John Sutter, a Wall Street tax attorney living on Long Island’s Gold Coast who becomes neighbors with a Mafia don. The tension between old-money WASP society and organized crime drives the story, along with Sutter’s complicated marriage and moral compromises.
The Gate House followed in 2008, picking up with Sutter ten years after the events of The Gold Coast. He returns to Long Island and must confront the consequences of his earlier choices, along with a new set of dangers. The two books together tell a story about wealth, class, crime, and the way the past refuses to stay buried.
