John Dunning’s non-fiction work centers on two subjects: old-time radio and true crime. Tune in Yesterday: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio (1976) was his first reference book, covering American radio programming from its beginnings through 1976. The expanded and updated On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio (1998) became the standard reference work for the subject and remains widely used by collectors and historians of radio’s golden age.
Truly Murderous (1979) took a different direction, covering real murder cases. Dunning’s knowledge of old-time radio also informed his novel Two O’Clock Eastern Wartime, showing how his non-fiction research fed into his fiction.
