John Carter of Mars is one of the foundational series of science fiction, beginning with A Princess of Mars in 1912. The series follows John Carter, a former Confederate soldier who is transported to Mars, known as Barsoom to its inhabitants. On this dying world of warring civilizations, Carter’s Earth-born strength makes him a formidable warrior, and he falls in love with the Martian princess Dejah Thoris.
Burroughs continued the series through eleven original novels, from The Gods of Mars (1913) to John Carter of Mars (1941), along with the posthumous Skeleton Men of Jupiter (1943). Later additions include a 2012 movie novelization. The series influenced countless science fiction works and was adapted into the 2012 Disney film John Carter.
