Short fiction has always been a testing ground for horror writers, and Joe McKinney has used the format to explore ideas that don’t fit neatly into his novel series. The Crossing, published in 2011, connects back to the Dead World universe and offers additional texture for readers already familiar with that series.
Bury My Heart at Marvin Gardens, from 2012, and Lost and Found, from 2014, round out this smaller collection of shorter works. These pieces tend to be darker and more experimental than his novels, working in the tradition of classic American horror short fiction.
For readers who have worked through McKinney’s major series and want more, these shorter works offer a different angle on his writing. They also work as introductions for readers who prefer to sample an author’s voice before committing to a longer series.
