Jody Hedlund’s two standalone novels take a biographical approach to historical figures of the Christian faith. Luther and Katharina (2015) tells the love story of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora, the former nun he married. Newton and Polly (2016) follows John Newton, the slave trader turned hymn writer who composed “Amazing Grace,” and his relationship with his wife.
Both books blend documented history with fictional romance, staying close to the known facts while filling in personal details and dialogue. They stand apart from Hedlund’s series work in their focus on real people rather than fictional characters.
