Jodi Picoult’s standalone novels make up the bulk of her work. Beginning with Songs of the Humpback Whale (1992) and continuing through By Any Other Name (2024), the collection spans more than thirty years. Many of these novels follow a similar structure: a family faces an extreme situation, perspectives shift between characters, and the story builds toward a legal or ethical confrontation.
Some of her best-known standalones include My Sister’s Keeper (2004), about a girl conceived to be a bone marrow donor for her sister; Nineteen Minutes (2007), about a school shooting in a small New Hampshire town; and The Storyteller (2013), in which a baker befriends an elderly man who turns out to be a former Nazi. More recent titles include A Spark of Light (2018), set during a hostage situation at a reproductive health clinic, Wish You Were Here (2021), which takes place during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Mad Honey (2022), co-written with Jennifer Finney Boylan, about a teenage boy accused of killing his girlfriend.
